The first rule of trail running - Don't fall!

Trail shoes are running shoes designed specifically for off road use - forests, mountains, beaches, trails. 

Trail shoes that are modified road shoes feature a more robust upper, often waterproof and a grippier sole with deeper lugs.
More specific trail shoes have a lower profile to be more stable in vigorous conditions and varying surfaces and often feature specific lacing systems, toe bumpers etc. Though these will not be as cushioned as a modified road shoe.
