CCU Galloper Thompson 5k

It was fantastic to support this year’s Galloper Thompson 5k, organised by our good friends at North Belfast Harriers. The event took place on Friday, 18th October, bringing plenty of Halloween spirit to Grove Playing Fields and the surrounding streets of North Belfast.

For those unfamiliar with local folklore, the event is named after the infamous legend of Galloper Thompson, said to be the ghost of Gordon Augustus Thompson, a 19th-century wealthy landowner whose spirit is rumored to ride a dark steed around Jennymount and the surrounding areas.

North Belfast Harriers certainly put on a Spooktacular show! The haunted race theme was matched by incredible costumes from both the volunteers and the runners. From ghosts and ghouls to witches and superheroes, the creative effort on display made for an unforgettable atmosphere.

Organised by the Team

This event is particularly close to our hearts at the shop! Our very own staff member Paddy took on the mantle of Race Director, leading the charge to pull off a seamless evening. He was backed by a stellar crew, including our team member Brendan and former colleague Conal, who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to bring the event to life.

On the Course

We had plenty to cheer about during the race itself.

Emily McRitchie (North Belfast Harriers) delivered an outstanding performance to claim 1st place in the ladies’ race, in a pb of 17:57. A massive congratulations to Emily on a brilliant win! Whilst shop team members Catriona, Jenny, and Brendan, laced up their running shoes and joined the crowd, braving the haunting hills in full fancy dress.

The 5k route kicked off on Jellicoe Avenue before taking runners up Skegoneill Avenue, onto Somerton Road, and up the tricky climb of Waterloo Gardens. After tackling the incline, participants sped back down the Antrim Road and Skegoneill Avenue to cross the finish line in Grove Park to atmospheric cheer.

A massive well done to everyone who took part, and huge appreciation goes out to all the marshals and volunteers who made the evening run so smoothly and safely.

We’re already looking forward to next year's event! 🎃🐎👻
